| So my favorite film from the Citizen Jane Film Festival, Appropriate Behavior, is finally getting theatrical distribution! I said that I was going to do a separate post about this film but that never ended up happening (oops), so I just wanted to share the trailer here and say a short bit about it. First off, the writer/director/lead actress of the film, Desiree Akhavan, is basically my role model. Appropriate Behavior is her first feature film out of NYU film school, and not only is she a female filmmaker (which, as I talked about in my post about Citizen Jane, is important in itself), but the subject matter of her film is something to be revered. Appropriate Behavior follows Shirin, a twenty-something bisexual Iranian woman living in New York City, as she tries to get her life together after a breakup. Through flashbacks, we follow the relationship from beginning to end, while in the present we get to see how she chooses to deal with it. The film explores the ideas of acceptance and self-exploration as the lead character slowly starts to accept herself and her life and learns to deal with it in a mature way. Appropriate Behavior is a film that is relatable and honest, but also unabashedly funny and real. The lead character is so relatable, despite the fact that she is a minority, and I think that's what makes the film so refreshing to watch. I HIGHLY recommend this film. |
